In short
- SEO (search engine optimization) is everything that helps Google understand your website and show it to the right people.
- A website without SEO can be beautiful and still be invisible: if it isn’t on the first page, almost nobody sees it.
- The basics are simple: clear titles and descriptions, speed, a site that works well on phones, good text and a Google Business Profile.
- SEO takes time, but unlike ads, the results keep coming after the work is done.
What SEO means, in plain words
SEO stands for search engine optimization. In practice, it means preparing your website so Google understands what you do, where you are and who you help, and shows it to the people searching for exactly that.
Picture Google as a giant library, with a librarian who has to recommend the right book in a fraction of a second. A website with SEO is a book with a clear title, a summary on the back cover and well-organized chapters. A website without SEO is a book with a blank cover: it might be wonderful, but the librarian can’t tell what it’s about, so it stays on the shelf.
The difference on Google
Let’s go back to the bakery from the article about online presence. Someone nearby searches for “artisan bakery near me”. This is what usually happens:

Source: Backlinko, analysis of 4 million Google searches.
According to a Backlinko study of 4 million Google searches, the first result gets about 27.6% of all clicks, while fewer than 1 in 100 people click on anything on the second page. In practice, being on page 5 is almost the same as not being on Google at all.
What Google “sees” in each website
Google reads your website a bit like a robot: it looks for clues about what each page is about. When the clues are missing, it has to guess, and it usually guesses badly. Here’s how the same kind of business can appear in the results:

- No description, so Google shows random text from the page.
- No service or neighborhood, so it doesn’t match local searches.

- A description written to invite the click.
- Uses the words people actually type into Google.
The checklist: website with SEO vs without SEO
Here are the main differences side by side. You don’t need to memorize the technical names, just the idea behind each one.
Results over time
A website without SEO usually gets the same few visits from people who already know the business name. A website with SEO keeps gaining ground: every page Google understands becomes one more door for new customers to walk in.
SEO isn’t magic, and it isn’t instant: it usually takes a few months to show results. But the work keeps paying off, month after month.
SEO or Google Ads?
Ads are the other way to appear on Google. The difference is in how long the results last:
Google Ads: like renting a billboard
You show up right away, but only while you pay. When the budget runs out, the visits stop.
SEO: like planting a garden
It takes a few months to grow, but then it keeps bringing visitors without you paying for each click.
What you can do today
Some SEO steps are free and you can take them yourself:
- Create or complete your Google Business Profile with your address, opening hours, photos and a link to your website.
- Ask happy clients for reviews. They help both Google and future clients trust you.
- Describe what you do in your clients’ words. “Wedding cakes in Toronto” works better than “sweet creations”.
- Open your website on your phone. If it’s hard to read or slow, your visitors feel it too.
- Add your website to Google Search Console (it’s free) to see which searches bring people to you.
The rest (structure, speed, titles, descriptions and the technical setup) is best done while the website is being built. That’s why every website I design comes with basic SEO from day one, and advanced SEO is available as an add-on. Tell me about your project.
Frequently asked questions
Does every website need SEO?
If you want people who don’t know you yet to find you on Google, yes. Even a simple one-page website benefits from good titles, descriptions and speed.
How long does SEO take to work?
Usually a few months for the first results, depending on the competition. Searches for your business name and very local searches tend to work sooner.
Can I do SEO myself?
You can do the basics yourself: your Google Business Profile, reviews and good text. The technical part is much easier when the website is built with SEO from the start.
Is SEO a one-time job?
The foundation is laid when the website is built. After that, keeping your information up to date and adding new content, like a blog, helps you keep growing.
What’s the difference between SEO and paying for Google Ads?
Ads put you at the top straight away, but only while you pay. SEO takes longer and builds visits that keep coming without paying for each click.
